Author Visits

I am now booking author visits to schools, colleges, adult groups and festivals for autumn and spring terms. If your school is studying The Clockwork Crow or any other of my books, contact me on the form on this website to discuss dates and times. World Book Day is already booked, but I can do other dates during that week.

Current Projects

A few people have been asking about the progress of the third INCARCERON novel, Lachrymere. Well, the good news is that it’s finished, after I’ve spent about a year writing it. It was a fascinating process and I feel the story has now reached its appropriate ending. It is now on its journey to find a publisher, who will hopefully re-issue the first two books as well. No spoilers, but someone is stealing the Seven Tears of Sapphique, and Finn’s Coronation is approaching… Watch this space. In other news, I have written a new Arthurian re-telling for Graffeg Press. The Lady of the [...]

The Candleman returns

On March 1st 2026 Firefly Press will republish The Candleman, my novel from 1994, as the first in its new series of Classic Childrens’ novels from Wales. It’s certainly time Wales had a series like this, and I hope the book will be joined by many well-loved volumes in the future. The Candleman will have a new Introduction by Dimitra Fimi, and a series introduction by Nicola Davies, the current Children’s Laureate for Wales. The book is one of my favourites, as it’s set on the Gwent levels near where I live, that marshy, mysterious tract of land between the [...]

One from the archives; July 1989

Here’s one from the archives. The year is 1989, late June, and my first poetry collection Imramma had just won the Welsh Arts Council Young Writers Prize. In those days the prizes were awarded to, I think, 4 Welsh language and 4 English language writers, plus the youngster. These prizes are now the Book of the Year. This photo was taking after the event, which was held at St Ffagans. We all crammed around a bench outside and Leslie Norris kept making dry jokes, I remember. I don’t remember much else except it was a lovely hot sunny afternoon, my Dad [...]

The Terror- A reading.

The Three Impostors Press are republishing Arthur Machen’s first world War thriller The Terror, in a limited edition hardback with an introduction from Tim Lebbon. Tim will be talking about the book, and I will be reading from it, at Arcadia Cafe in Newport on December 5th. I’ll also be bringing some of my own books for sale. Machen of course was not a children’s writer, but was born in Caerleon in 1863, and is one of Wales most influential writers of strange and weird tales.

Starspill is here!

It’s been over a hundred years since the Wolf swallowed the Sun, and the town of Starspill is wreathed in eternal fog. But a boy called Zac  is woken at night and given a task to do by the haughty cats of the town… even though the thought of him scares him stiff! … I wanted to write a cosy, strange and intriguing story that middle grade readers would love, with a lot of my favourite things in it – a magical bookshop, maps, cats, and a labyrinth that might lead you anywhere. It was fun to write and I [...]

I’m delighted to reveal the cover for Culhwch and Olwen (designed and illustrated by Efa Lois. Published by Graffeg Press. ) Publication is on 6th June, and it will be great to see a project I have long wanted to write out in the world. This is the earliest full Arthurian tale, an explosion of giants, magic boars, cauldrons, swords and talking animals. It’s one of my favourite stories. Hope you enjoy it.
