One from the archives; July 1989

Here’s one from the archives. The year is 1989, late June, and my first poetry collection Imramma had just won the Welsh Arts Council Young Writers Prize. In those days the prizes were awarded to, I think, 4 Welsh language and 4 English language writers, plus the youngster. These prizes are now the Book of the Year.

This photo was taking after the event, which was held at St Ffagans. We all crammed around a bench outside and Leslie Norris kept making dry jokes, I remember. I don’t remember much else except it was a lovely hot sunny afternoon, my Dad came with me, there were scones and cream to eat, and I got to meet some of the great Welsh writers of the day, a quite amazing experience for me then, to be able to chat to them, and they were all very friendly and welcoming. I think it was the first ‘Writers Event’ I ever went to.
