I’m delighted to announce that my new version of the ancient Welsh story of Culhwch and Olwen will be appearing next year from Graffeg. It’s a story that has always fascinated me, and trying to shape it into a new form was a real joy.
Culhwch, a prince born in a pig sty, is fated to marry only Olwen, the daughter of the Giant Ysbaddaden, a being so vast his eyelids are held up with forks. Knowing his daughter’s marriage means his own death, the Giant sets the unlucky prince a series of impossible tasks. But Culhwch”s cousin is Arthur, and with the help of his astonishing court of magical men and women, the quest might possibly be achieved.
By turns comic, strange, eerie and sad, the tale is a patchwork of folktales and forgotten lore, and ends with a wild, careering hunt carefully plotted across the landscape of Wales.
This version is intended for children, but I hope it can be read by anyone who enjoys this material.
